SUMMARY:Brechner Speaker Series: Asian American Pacific Islander Icons in Central Florida
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning journalist Valerie Boey Ramsey as she takes us on a journey through the rich and often overlooked history of Orlando’s AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community. From the pioneers who helped shape Florida’s early landscape to the modern-day advocates who are driving change in our city\, this lecture explores trailblazers who have made lasting impacts. Hear firsthand accounts from these influential figures and gain insight into the challenges and triumphs of Orlando’s AAPI community. \n \n\nAbout the Speaker\nValerie Boey Ramsey is the owner of VBR Ink and a freelance journalist with WFTV\, as well as a contributor to The New York Times. She currently serves as president of the Asian American Journalists Association in Florida and was recently named one of Orlando Magazine’s 2025 Women of the Year. In addition to her journalism work\, she volunteers with several nonprofits including the Central Florida Women’s League and Runway to Hope. Valerie enjoys traveling and playing golf with her husband\, Jeff.\nAbout the Brechner Series\nThe History Center’s Brechner Speaker Series honors the late Joseph L. Brechner\, a longtime journalist\, Central Florida community leader\, and television pioneer who is also remembered as one of Orlando’s first clear public voices for civil rights. The son of Eastern European immigrants\, Brechner believed deeply in American democracy and citizens’ responsibilities to be informed and participate. The museum’s research center\, home to the archival collection and historical of the Historical Society of Central Florida\, also bears Brechner’s name.\n\n

SUMMARY:Roundtable Discussion Operation Sindoor : Implications and Lessons for a Rising India
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 30\, 2025 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n\n\nOperation Sindoor: Implications and Lessons for a Rising India \n10:00 AM EST/7:30 PM IST by Zoom \n\n\n\nThe recent India-Pakistan crisis has dawned a new geopolitical reality in South Asia. From practicing strategic restraint in the past\, India is now willing to use force to achieve deterrence against terrorism\, even under the shadow of nuclear weapons. It has significant implications for India’s military strategy\, diplomacy\, and international relations. Does the conflict reinforce India’s rise or dampen it? Even if India’s rise may be inevitable\, how does the crisis with Pakistan shape how it wields power in pursuit of its national interests? As India grows in economic strength and geopolitical influence\, does it now see military force as an essential tool rather than a last resort? Does India use its international partnerships to reinforce its power projection\, or does the growing multipolarity mean India will be alone in its quest for security? Does regional instability hinder India’s ascent\, or does it offer an opportunity to demonstrate its ability to manage conflicts on its terms? If India’s global stature depends on its ability to navigate crises like these\, what lessons should it draw to refine its long-term strategic approach? Equally important is the burden of expectations that India’s policy of zero tolerance against terrorism engenders for India’s political leadership. These questions will guide the roundtable discussion\, offering deeper insight into the ways India’s rise redefines its response to the growing challenges and opportunities in its neighborhood as well as in international politics. \nRoundtable discussion with Lieutenant General Deependra Singh Hooda\, former General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian army’s Northern Command\, Happymon Jacob\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor of Diplomacy and Disarmament Studies at the School of International Studies\, Jawaharlal Nehru University\, and Suhasini Haider\, Diplomatic Editor of The Hindu\, one of India’s oldest and most respected national dailies. \nRSVP at https://t.e2ma.net/click/mtn6wl/un0ixvr/qg8s3x \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
