APAICS Leadership Weekend in Orlando, Florida

1966

Orlando, Florida – Feb. 3-5, 2017 – The Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional
Studies (APAICS) is hosting its 2017 Leadership Weekend in Orlando, Florida, to politically
engage AAPIs in the state.

On Feb. 3 , APAICS will be hosting a Young Leaders Summit from 8:30 a.m to 7 p.m. The 2017 Young Leaders Summit is a one-day conference designed to engage with college student leaders and promote leadership in public service. Students will gain a deeper understanding of how to be an effective leader and create positive change through public service and civic engagement from interactive workshops and guest speakers. Students will also have opportunities to develop relationships with distinguished leaders in government, the nonprofit and private sector. Click here to register for this event.

“APAICS is really excited to host our 2017 Young Leaders Summit in Orlando, Florida. We
have noticed a recent rise in strong college leadership in Florida and are excited to present
workshops and speakers that will challenge and equip student leaders with new skills they can
take back to their communities,” said Cathy He, APAICS Program Director.

On Feb. 4 and 5 , APAICS will be hosting its Regional Leadership Academy. The Regional
Leadership Academy is a two-day leadership and training program to further develop leadership skills, promote public service, and support impactful leaders in AAPI communities across the country while delivering practical training and advice to those considering public office and local office-holders who seek higher office. The program also allows APAICS to partner with local community leaders to discuss current issues affecting the AAPI community in the region, provide leadership training, and develop the growing network of past APAICS program participants. During our Orlando leadership weekend, former Secretary of Transportation and Asian
American pioneer Norman Mineta , Representative of Georgia State House District 101 Sam
Park , and US Congressman Darren Soto (FL-9) will be in attendance for keynote remarks.
Both events have free registration, and food will be provided. The attire is business casual.

“Our Regional Leadership Academy is geared towards AAPIs who are interested in running for
public office in the future. Ground-breaking AAPI political leaders such as former Secretary of
Commerce and Transportation Norman Mineta, Senators Daniel Inouye, Daniel Akaka and
Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, Representatives Mike Honda and Doris Matsui have all led by example and helped usher in the first generation of AAPIs into elected office,” said He. “The Regional Leadership Academy is a great opportunity for AAPIs to gain access to resources on how they can run a successful political campaign. These tools are necessary to ensure that we pave the way for new generations of AAPI elected officials and community leaders, activists and students to step up and assume many of these leadership roles to further develop the AAPI political pipeline.”

“APAICS is really excited to host both our 2017 Young Leaders Summit and Regional
Leadership Academy in Orlando. Florida has been a contentious region that reflects the
growing and diverse community of AAPIs in the U.S. The state is now home to almost 700,000 AAPIs, a 98-percent increase from 2000 to 2016,” said He. “This increase is reflected in the past general election where the first Asian American woman from Florida was elected to Congress. We are excited to engage with AAPIs in the region and hope to inspire, educate, and empower them to become more involved in local, state, and national politics.”
