Members of the MINDANAOANS USA (MUSA), a member organization of the Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc., aggressively campaigned for monetary assistance from the Philippine community in Tampa for victims of the 7.8 earthquake that hit the island of Mindanao last week.
MUSA’s newly elected president, Lovely Sempio, was in General Santos City in Mindanao attending a class reunion when the earthquake struck. Immediately, MUSA in Tampa called for an emergency meeting, led by MUSA founder Vivian Furigay-Dudgeon, and launched a campaign to help earthquake victims. Lovely asked all her classmates attending their reunion to help distribute goods to small towns cut off from the city and without water or electricity. Members of the local Lions Club, Rotary Club, and Notre Dame of Dadiangas, as well as Shirlyn Bañas, Representative for the Lone District of General Santos, also joined Lovely’s team in purchasing and distributing bags and boxes to victims in need.
With the money MUSA raised from Filipinos in Tampa, Lovely and her team were able to buy food, water, sacks of rice, toiletries, hygiene kits, canned goods, slippers, and medicines for diarrhea, since many had been drinking water from the rivers. MUSA has helped more than 400 families to date. Additional donations will help more families, as donations are still coming into MUSA Tampa.
To date, MUSA has helped victims from Sarangani Bay, Margus, Glan, General Santos City, and lately, Jose Abad Santos City.
MUSA president Lovely Sempio, officers and members of the board, thank all the Filipinos and Philippine organizations in Tampa Bay who have donated, with special mention to the doctors of Friends Who Care; Pilipino American Association of Tampa (PAAT); Musikong Kawayan-Bamboo Ensemble, Ang Bisaya Florida (ABF); Sto. Nino Shrine USA, MUSA members, and private Filipinos who have made monetary donations for the people of Mindanao.
THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!………..Mindanaoans USA
