Tokyo Midtown’s annual Christmas celebration returns with the same theme as last year “Someone is somebody’s Santa Claus” – presumably because they’d like you to buy something from one of the high end shops in the Galleria shopping center.

The highlight of the event – as always – is the “Starlight Garden”.  The 2,000m² midtown park square (behind the complex) be covered in 280,000 digitally controlled LEDs. The lights area billed as “A journey through the cosmos”. There will also be various other illuminations around Midtown with a “Santa Tree” at the entrance to the shopping center and a “Champagne Illumination” – described as a champagne glass shaped snow fall (no doubt sponsored by a major champagne brand).

The illumination is incredibly popular in the days leading up to Christmas (especially the 24th) with couples bringing a compulsory bottle of champers with them, so if you want to avoid the enormous crowds, you should go early.
