On Aug 17, a vibrant celebration of Teeyan brought women of all ages together in Oviedo. Orlando di Jugnia, is made up of 10 women from the Sikh society of central Florida in Oviedo and working professionals across Central Florida who decided to host Teeyan Mela (also known as Teej) in the Oviedo Mall. This traditional festival, celebrated primarily during the monsoon season, is dedicated to daughters and sisters and serves as a symbol of women empowerment and unity.

The event featured traditional singing, dancing, and cultural performances, with over 200 women participating. The focus was on uplifting one another while sharing and preserving our cultural heritage with the next generation and the local community.

Orlando di Jugnia were honored by the presence of Oviedo’s Mayor Megan Sladek, representatives from the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office Nancy Acevedo and Orange County Mayor Jerry Demming’s liaison, Shally Wong, who all actively participated in the festivities.

Teeyan Mela is a festival dedicated to celebrating the essence of womanhood, fertility, and the beauty of nature. It is a time for women to come together, dressed in colorful traditional attire, and participate in various cultural activities, dances, and rituals. The festival is marked by singing folk songs, swinging on decorated swings, applying intricate mehndi designs on hands, and feasting on delicious traditional dishes.

The festival of Teeyan Mela is a time of joy and merriment, as women gather to dance to the beats of dhol and sing traditional folk songs that narrate tales of love, relationships, and nature. The atmosphere is filled with laughter, music, and the sweet aroma of incense and flowers. Women adorn themselves with bright-colored clothes, intricate jewelry, and mehndi designs, adding to the festive spirit of the occasion.
