On July 23, 2025, Consul General Nakano conferred the Emperor of Japan’s “Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays” to Mr. Richard Del Vecchio as well as the “Order of the Sacred Treasure, Silver Rays” to Mr. Ernest Aguiar at the Consul General’s Official Residence.
Mr. Del Vecchio became involved with the Japanese community in 2005 when he helped promote “Kagoshima Miami Day,” an event at Miami Dade College that welcomed a delegation from Kagoshima City, which is the Sister City of Miami. His efforts, including securing support from Armstrong Toyota, helped promote Japanese culture & products in South Florida. In 2010, Mr. Del Vecchio began working more closely with the Miami Friends of the Japanese Garden, which oversees the Ichimura Miami Japanese Gardens, to expand its cultural festivals. After becoming President in 2011, he strongly led the organization in promoting Japanese culture through festivals, partnerships, and community outreach.
Mr. Aguiar joined the Consulate General of Japan in Miami in 1998 as Senior Political Analyst, serving for over 26 years until his retirement in 2024. With expertise in U.S. and Latin American politics and economics, he contributed to strengthening Japan-Florida relations through analysis and a wide range of projects. He played a key role in supporting staff transitions and maintaining institutional knowledge and networks. After participating in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ (MOFA) Senior Training Program in 2014, he further expanded the scope of his contributions and guided colleagues. His long-standing dedication was also recognized with MOFA’s Long-Service award in both 2009 and 2018. His dedication and warm personality greatly enhanced the Consulate’s work environment.
In recognition of both of their significant contributions to enhancing ties between Japan and Florida, Consul General Nakano was delighted to confer these imperial orders.
