AI and Smart Mobility – The Future Is Here

If you didn’t notice it is happening, AI is already all around us:

More and more startups are chasing the flying car dream and flying drone taxis are coming sooner than you think.

The transformation includes the Amazonization, decentralization and democratization of every “N-ation”.

Sure enough, Electric driverless cars, in land, in air or underwater are the future; they will reduce carbon emissions, revolutionize rides experience, security and even parking, create new cultural norms… and in many ways will change your life.

Companies are developing Neural Networks and teaching AI to create more AI, differ and recognize object and organisms, to play video games, to compose and to play music and to create art.

And the list is long… In fact, Machine learning (ML) is becoming so popular, that there’s a shortage of experts who can make the software.

AI, AI, AI, AI, AI… Obviously, international trade and commercial profit are indeed main reasons for us to explore our curiosity and beyond. As we know, Ladies and Sirs will always need to have fashionable items, be it a LV bag or a IWC watch, green tea or a flight ticket to Mars.

AI & Smart Mobility – Start-Up Nation

Israel is a home to an innovative ecosystem of AI and smart mobility and the world is taking notice. Cutting edge technologies account for only part of that success. A growing number of multinationals have chosen to set up R&D centers in Israel, and Israel represents one of the largest markets for startups acquisitions and investments in these fields.

While Israel does not have a native auto manufacturing, it does excel in the automobile smart technology sector. With hundreds new startups and entrepreneurs every year and a comprehensive business ecosystem: monthly activities including workshops, competitions, hackathons, investor events and delegations – no wonder global auto manufacturers and tech giants are looking at Israel while creating the next generation of smart vehicles. Leading OEM’s and tier 1&2 companies are turning to Israel to develop cutting edge technologies to deck out their latest products, and playing a key role in the Israeli ecosystem.

As said, AI will shape our world and will be all around us, as for Ladies and Sirs can’t live as Ladies and Sirs should unless they own a smart phone, pets and servants, fancy garments and travel the world for leisure!

AI and consciousness – Do Robots Deserve Rights?

Humanity is on a quest to create genius machines that live and love, but the way is long and there are many uncertainties and hurdles.

With the advances made in autonomous driving technology, much fuss has been made over the infamous trolley problem. Though the ethical and legal uncertainties AVs face are very real, some have criticized the absurdity of certain fringe scenarios.

Ethics and morality in AI goes a long way and regardless of what we think, the question might need to be resolved in the near future. Super-smart robots with artificial intelligence is pretty much a foregone conclusion: technology is moving in that direction with lightning speed. But what happens when those robots gain consciousness? Will they deserve the same rights as humans? The ethics of this are complicated.

“Robots will soon engage and live with us to teach, serve, entertain, delight, and provide comforting companionship. They will learn from us and we will learn from them. Every human interaction will have an impact on how they develop and who they’ll eventually become. In the not-too-distant future, Genius Machines will walk among us. They will be smart, kind, and wise. Together, man and machine will create a better future for the world,” says David Hanson.

Image: Dr. David Hanson and Albert Einstein HUBO, the first-ever walking robot with realistic, humanlike expressions. Is Dr. Hanson, the ‘Crazy Scientist’ is too optimistic?

Imagine your kids’ doll or your adult BFF robot, asks you about your day, maybe mentoring you to be the better of yourself, a better human, maybe invites you to go to the movies, help you with your daily tasks and more. Such a companion sounds so perfect that it’s hard not to wish for such a friend and eventually fall in LOVE with it; even nowadays we seem so attached to our smart phones that we can’t break apart of them. At which point will you ask yourself if it has feelings? If it feels pain? … And if it loves you as much as you LOVE it!

Well, if the robot looks like a cute dog pet, then it is only a friend, but if it is designed as human, it is another scenario as we are biologically wired to react in a certain way to our own kind.

Now, fast forward, WHAT IF Machines Become Conscious?

Will these robots deserve RIGHTS?

Most likely YES! But we are not yet prepared to it as we don’t know what consciousness is.

Regardless of the precise of the definition, we have intuitive knowledge of consciousness because we experience it. We are aware of ourselves and our surroundings, and know what unconsciousness feels like.

Some neuroscientists believe that any sufficiently advanced system can generate consciousness. So if your BFF robot becomes powerful enough it might become self-aware. If it does would it deserve rights?

Well, not so fast… going back it time, slavery was a social norm, then ‘they’ were freed, and with time human society became more and more aware to the meanings of FREEDOM and Human Rights.

Freedom of thinking and freedom of action and freedom of being different… and we are still on the journey toward a Global Mindset and an Awareness which is more open to the suffer of other species. See for examples a growing modern phenomenon of more and more humans are becoming vegan. Why is that?

Humans have a long history of denying that other beings are capable of suffering as they do. It was always and still is about economic interests.

WAIT! WAIT! WAIT!

Will Robots will create Robots that can feel pain – and for what reason?

PAIN + PLEASURE = LIFE

AI and AE (Artificial Emotional Intelligence) raises serious questions about philosophical boundaries. What we may ask if sentient robots are conscious or deserving of rights? It forces us to pose basic questions, like what makes us human? What makes us deserving of rights?

Regardless of what we think, the question might need to be resolved in the near future.

Last but not least, what are we going to do if robots start demanding their own rights?
