May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage month and we honor those AAPI cultures who contribute to this wonderful melting pot that is the USA. The picnic was held on Memorial Day weekend to also commemorate those who’ve gone before us and gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.  Many in Florida’s Space Coast community have connections to the military with deep roots and great love and respect for those who serve and have served our country. We all have a special place in our hearts for those personnel who died in wars to promote liberty for us and the world.

The day began with a prayer of thanksgiving followed by a powerful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner sung by Angelina Dexter. Afterwards lunch was amazing with delicious homemade international foods. As guests settled in for lunch they were encouraged to get to know those around them by asking each other a few questions such as, “what’s one thing most people don’t know about you?” and “what’s the strangest food you’ve ever eaten (maybe something that others might think is strange)?  Strange food was the most popular topic, and readers can guess what some of the outrageous answers were. Everyone received a prize for their answers!

Roxanne Mililani Aberilla Celio led Praise and Worship Hula dancers in a beautiful interpretation of contemporary Christian singer Crystal Lewis song “Come just as you are” which explains the heart of God’s love, in that we’re invited come into relationship with Him, just as we are right now; we don’t have to do anything or get ready first. He’s calling us to Himself  just the way we are.

Later many enjoyed participating in Zumba line dances after lunch and interactive team games that made us laugh out loud! The event was a success so many ways and none of it would have been possible without those who attended and the many volunteers who helped set up/clean up, prepare/serve food, and invited family and friends. Old friendships were renewed and many new friendships made .

The weather looked threatening all day but the Son was shining nonstop. For those who asked why we have a picnic, it’s because our church exist to glorify God by being a loving community where people are saved, set free, discipled, empowered, and sent out to fulfill their God-given calling. We are a body of believers pursuing Christ, seeking fellowship with one another, and looking to build cross-cultural bridges in Brevard County and beyond by sharing the love of Jesus. Thank You Lord for what You did this day!
