They are called Taiko which means big drum in Japanese. The time and effort that goes into them is unreal and can take around 5 years. One that they are working on was carved from a tree that was over 700 years old and the completed drum will weigh around 2000 lbs. Pretty awesome!!!

How they build their Taikos. It’s very fascinating to see “How they do it”

Asano Taiko, located in Matto, Ishikawa Prefecture, is on of the major taiko manufacturers in Japan. Ever since its foundation in 1609, the company has been making a wide range of taiko drums, with all processes from the felling of the trees to the finishing touches done by hand.

Asano Taiko was founded by taiko maker Saemongoro Asano in 1609 and has a mind-boggling history of 400 years in the trade. Saemongoro was summoned from Harima (today’s Hyogo Prefecture) by the Kaga clan and founded Asano Taiko in Fukutomi, Ishikawa Village (today’s Fukudome in Hakusan City).

As well as manufacturing taiko drums, Asano Taiko has been promoting taiko culture by establishing such facilities as the “Taiko no Sato Shiryokan” museum, which exhibits percussion instruments from around the world, the taiko practice hall “Shinkyokan” and “Asano-EX“, a space for culture and art-related events, in addition to holding taiko classes for adults and children and publishing a newsletter about taiko.

In 1998, Asano Taiko completed the world’s largest taiko, the culmination of 400 years of skill and tradition. To pass on the taiko sound to the future- the sound which has excited the hearts of those to hear it from ancient times- Asano Taiko continues to make wadaiko with all their heart.

From cutting the tree and shipping the bole to finishing the body, lacquering, and tacking, the master craftsmen of Asano Taiko handcraft instruments that will meet your highest expectations.
