Taste of Taiwan 2025, hosted by the Taiwanese American Student Association (TASA) and the Taiwanese Student Association (TWSA) at the University of Michigan on March 22nd, is an annual event that showcases Taiwanese culture. In addition to numerous food and game booths that give attendees a taste of a traditional Taiwanese night market, performances by various U of M groups and raffles with prizes such as rice cookers and PlayStations also add to the excitement. FASCA Michigan generously donated food, assisted with food service, and helped run game stations.

Junior Ashley Twu, this year’s TASA co-president and chair of the event, believes that the event’s success lies in its ability to make Taiwanese culture easily accessible to a broad audience. She credits the event’s success to the strong organization behind it: “We have a really strong board that helps run the event, ensuring everything goes smoothly.” TASA and TWSA collaborate extensively to plan the games, food, performances, and decorations.

The community of students is another factor that draws people to Taste of Taiwan. An international student and four-time attendee of the event says, “I think this community is great! Everyone comes together each year to bring a wonderful fusion of culture, performances, and food. It’s really inspiring to see everyone come together, and it means a lot to me every year that they organize this event. I love coming back each year.” This sense of community is further strengthened by the UMich organizations that perform at the event, including dance groups like RXN and 886, as well as the Diabolo club Revolution and the glow stick club Photonix. “Our performers also help us attract an audience because everyone wants to see them perform,” says President Twu.

In addition to fostering a strong Taiwanese community, a key objective of TASA is to raise awareness of Taiwan. Taste of Taiwan, as their biggest event of the year, plays a significant role in achieving this goal. Junior Henry Wong, the family chair of TASA, says, “Taste of Taiwan promotes our on-campus presence, as well as our visibility in Ann Arbor and the wider Michigan community. It helps get our name out there.” Sophomore Tyler Yee, an outreach chair of TASA, adds, “Taste of Taiwan brings everyone together, ensuring things run smoothly. We feel a sense of pride in working with TASA to help elevate the Taiwanese image across the entire campus.”
