Somen are thin white wheat flour noodles which are quite popular in the summer.
Usually, somen noodles are enjoyed cold after boiling and being rinsed in ice-water. When eating them you usually dip the somen into a cold soy-based soup called “Tsuyu”.
There is also a popular social way to enjoy somen during the summer known as “nagashi somen” or “flowing somen”. In nagashi somen the noodles are put into a bamboo flume with fast-flowing water. Those participating then have to catch the somen as it flows by with their chopsticks.
This refreshing summer dish is a must for anyone looking to experience the Japanese summer vibe!
